Pipe Cleaner Carrot Craft

How to Make a Pipe Cleaner Carrot

- Pipe cleaners (orange and green)

Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
Step 2: Make the base of the carrot
- Print our pipe cleaner carrot template on paper or cardstock.
- Trace the template pieces onto orange cardstock and cut them out.
- Roll the main template into a cone shape and secure it with tape.
- Then add hot glue along the base of the cone.
- Attach the circle into the glue, centering it in place.
- The circle will be a bit large for the cone. Trim it down where needed.(The larger circle allows it to fit perfectly no matter how you’ve rolled the cone.)
Step 3: Wrap the carrot shape with pipe cleaners
- Begin by wrapping an orange pipe cleaner end around itself, creating a small spiral.
- Add a dot of hot glue to the top center of the carrot and place the spiral in it. Hold the pipe cleaner down for a minute until it stays in place.
- Add more glue around the pipe cleaner and continue wrapping the pipe cleaner around.
- Ensure that the edge of the cone is covered well and add a new pipe cleaner into some glue when you’re finished with the first.
- Continue wrapping pipe cleaner around the carrot, ensuring that your rows are nice and straight and that they’re close together.
- When you get to the tip of the carrot cut off the excess pipe cleaner and fold the end down into the glue. You can use tweezers to fold the end in if you’re worried about getting burnt.
Step 4: Create a rounded top
- If you just cover the top of the carrot once it looks quite flat. So add a dot of glue near the edge.
- Place a pipe cleaner end into the glue and then curve it so it covers the pipe cleaner below.
- Continue gluing the pipe cleaner in towards the middle, covering the pipe cleaner beneath it. This will create a more curved, rounded top for the carrot.
Step 5: Add greenery to the carrot
- To make the greenery, grab a green pipe cleaner and bend the end down about 1/4 inch.
- Fold the long part of the pipe cleaner into a loop about 3/4 to 1 inch long. Twist the loop to secure it.
- Repeat, making 3 more loops about the same length. Bend the loops so they go up a bit in the middle and then curve down.
- Secure the loops by wrapping pipe cleaner around the first 1/4 inch fold. Cut off the excess pipe cleaner.
- Add a dot of glue to the top center of the carrot. Place the straight bottom part of the greenery into the glue. Hold it for a minute until it stays in place on its own.
- Your pipe cleaner carrot is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- No orange cardstock? No problem: If you don’t have orange cardstock, you can use white cardstock instead. Just be sure to wrap the pipe cleaners tightly and cover the base completely so no white shows through.
- Use a low-temperature glue gun: A low-temp glue gun (or a dual temperature one) works best for this project. It helps prevent burns while you’re wrapping and securing the pipe cleaners around the cone.

What size carrot does the template make?
The printable template makes a carrot approximately 3-1/2 inches long (including the greenery) and 1-1/2 inches wide at the top.
If you’d like to make a larger or smaller carrot, simply adjust the print scale in your settings before printing.
How many pipe cleaners do I need to make one pipe cleaner carrot?
You’ll need about 4 orange pipe cleaners for the carrot itself and 1 green pipe cleaner for the stem and foliage.
Can I make this carrot craft without printing the template?
Yes, definitely! You can draw your own cone template on cardstock and adjust it until you’re happy with the shape.
Another option is to create a base by folding and taping a paper towel or napkin into a cone shape. You can even scrunch aluminum foil into a carrot form and wrap the pipe cleaners around that.
