Packing all of your things and moving to your college dorm can be an easy process, but only if you have a list that covers everything you need to take with you! Tips and tricks for packing with ease
Packing for your college dorm isn’t as simple as putting your belongings in boxes and unpacking them as soon as you move in. If only it were that easy! Here are a few tips and tricks that are helpful to know for when you’re packing and moving in.
- Use vacuum-sealed storage bags for bulky things – Packing bulky things like comforters, pillows, and blankets can be a pain because of how much space they take up! So to save space when packing for your college dorm, put those bulky things in vacuum-sealed bags!
- Utilize command strips – You can’t use nails to drill into the walls of your dorm room. And if you did, then you’ll face one heck of a bill demanding that you pay for the damage at the end of the year! So if there’s anything you want to hang on your dorm room walls, make sure to use command strips. They’re so easy to use and best of all, they can easily be taken off the walls, leaving zero damage!
- Utilize under-bed space – You might find that your dorm room is pretty small. So with a small space, you need to get creative to maximize storage space. One way to do this is by using bed risers! You might need about 2 to 3 stacked under each leg of the bed to give you enough space to keep your things under your bed. Make sure you raise your bed as soon as you move into your dorm to avoid readjusting your bed once you’ve already unpacked everything!
- Take pictures of your dorm before unpacking your things – This is a very important tip to remember when moving into your dorm room. Take pictures of everything to avoid getting billed at the end of the year for a potential problem that was already there before you even moved in!
- Wipe down everything and sweep/vacuum – The previous person who lived in your dorm probably moved out a while ago. So between the day that they moved out and the day you moved in, quite a lot of dust may have built up. So make sure to wipe down everything and sweep or vacuum the floor before you unpack your things.
- Clean the toilet – One piece of advice I was told a long time ago was that whenever you move into a new place, make sure to clean the toilet before you use it. I’m talking wipe down the whole surface, use some toilet cleaner, scrub the toilet bowl, and flush it once you’ve cleaned it! This is mainly applicable if you have a private bathroom.

Here is the only college dorm packing list you need as a freshman! Keep in mind that this checklist covers the absolute essentials as well as the items that are nice to have but aren’t completely necessary. What’s important is that you take everything that applies to you and your needs!
Bedding
You’ll spend about one-third of your life sleeping. During college, those hours of sleep will probably be replaced by doing all-nighters to submit your essays. But for those other hours that you do sleep in bed, you gotta make sure that you’re sleeping comfortably. Your dorm bedding is so important to achieve this!

Clothing
One of the most important things you’ll have to pack for college is, obviously, your clothes! When I moved into my college dorm, I thought it would be the easiest part of packing. But you’d be shocked at the items of clothing that you can easily forget to take with you, like socks and flip-flops!
Of course, some clothing items might not apply to you if you live in a hotter or colder area, but I’d still recommend packing them just in case!

Electronics
Electronics are a necessity for surviving college, and I’m not only talking about your phone! Nowadays, if you’re in college, you’ll need some kind of electronic device to connect to the internet and access your online school materials.
Remember, not everything on this list will apply to you. For example, I was able to do all of my school work on my laptop when I went to college, so getting an iPad or tablet wasn’t necessary. But I definitely needed extension cords to charge my electronics, which is one item that I highly recommend everyone should pack for college!

Moving into your college dorm means having to face the (sometimes dreaded) community bathrooms. They’re not too bad, but for me personally, the worst part about using them was me! I would often forget to bring my bathroom essentials with me whenever I used the community bathrooms, which is why I highly recommend packing a portable shower caddy to put all of your bathroom supplies and toiletries inside!

When I was a freshman in college, I used to hate cleaning and laundry. But looking back, I now understand how important it is to regularly do them. Eventually, I grew to love cleaning and doing my laundry, and it’s such an easy task when you know what cleaning items and laundry essentials to pack (and when you have a cleaning schedule)!

School supplies
Buying school supplies was one of my favorite things to do in school and college! I’m definitely guilty of prioritizing making my school notes look nice aesthetically, but since it encouraged me to learn, it’s actually wasn’t such a bad thing! For school supplies such as pens, pencils, and highlighters, I recommend keeping half of them in your pencil case and half of them on your desk so you know you have backup in case a few of them go missing!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to have first aid and medicine going into freshman year. The Freshers’ Flu is real! Plus, you never know when you need band aids for your sports injuries and medicine for your hangover – or random cases of tonsillitis (I know this struggle from personal experience).

I would highly recommend a full body mirror and printed photos of friends and family to stick to the walls to personalize your space!

Kitchen stuff
You might not be cooking much during your freshman year, but it’s worth packing a few kitchen items for convenience. My top recommendation is a reusable water bottle! It’s so important to stay hydrated every single day, especially if your college is in a hotter area.
